About this Artist

Paris-based artist Maxime Mouysset wields color and form with the precision of a graphic designer and the whimsy of a visual raconteur. His vibrant, dynamic style—a masterful synthesis of typographic rigor and narrative playfulness—has cemented his reputation as a compelling voice in contemporary illustration.

Educated at Strasbourg’s prestigious *Haute École des Arts du Rhin*, Mouysset’s career began serendipitously. A chance encounter with an editorial designer at a Parisian party led to a formative two-year stint at Havas Sports & Entertainment. “Advertising taught me efficiency,” he reflects, likening the pace to working in journalism. Yet, the gravitational pull of illustration proved irresistible. By 2017, he abandoned the duality of advertising and design to pursue art full-time.

Mouysset’s work is deeply rooted in typography, an obsession ignited during a workshop with Alaric Garnier, where he painted oversized letters on walls—an exercise he describes as “instructive and fun.” This passion permeates his practice; he often crafts custom typefaces for personal projects, showcased in his solo exhibition *Grillés*. His eclectic influences span Italian erotic comics (*Necron* by Roberto Raviola) to the haunting landscapes of British painter David Inshaw, the latter inspiring a risograph series printed by Quintal Éditions.

Collaboration fuels his creativity. A breakthrough 2020 commission for *Télérama* tasked him with visualizing politics—a realm he found alien. The result? Absurdist, politically charged imagery that marked a stylistic evolution. “The challenge of translating unfamiliar themes into art excites me,” he says. “An illustrated fish is better if someone else asks for it.”

Based in a sunlit, central Paris atelier—a repurposed architect’s home with a tranquil terrace—Mouysset thrives amid the city’s cultural ferment. “Exhibitions, concerts, friends… Paris fosters healthy creative competition,” he notes. His workspace mirrors his ethos: structured yet open to serendipity.

Balancing client pragmatism with artistic experimentation, Mouysset views accidents as vital to growth. “Knowing your style is crucial,” he admits, “but so is straying from it.” For him, creation is a dance between discipline and daring—a philosophy ensuring his work remains as unpredictable as it is unforgettable.
