About the artist
Karlotta Freier, a German artist currently residing in New York, discovered her artistic voice in illustration after exploring various creative fields such as tattoo artistry, costume design, and fashion tailoring. Her passion for narrative drives her to craft intuitive and authentic art that reflects her style through the lens of comic art. Freier expresses her affection for storytelling, stating, "I'm a fan of storytelling in every shape and form, and I believe comics are an incredibly brilliant way to share a story. They have similar storytelling tools to cinema, with the added benefit of being a solitary endeavor. It's highly accessible and deeply personal." For Freier, drawing serves as a means to connect with any moment or situation and to find her role within it. Growing up in a large family, she often found solace in drawing during family gatherings, as she recalls, "I relished sitting at family gatherings, sketching while absorbing the sounds of my relatives." Art has the unique ability to create safe havens for both the artist and the audience. During challenging times, Freier sought comfort in her art, sharing, "Drawing was my reliable sanctuary. It was a private, secure space that was always within reach, something I could consistently retreat to and that was always within my grasp. To this day, having my sketchbook by my side provides a sense of security."
Comics, traditionally a genre featuring supernatural, exaggerated, or comedic characters, have long been a source of escapism and entertainment. However, an increasing number of artists are utilizing the comic medium to explore the nuances of everyday life. As a result, comic storytelling has evolved to embrace realism, allowing ordinary life to become a subject of contemplation. In her work, Freier captures glimpses of daily life, infused with unexpected elements of surprise. She explains, "I continue to draw inspiration from my everyday experiences. I incorporate people I encounter on the street into my comics, using my personal experiences and emotions to comprehend my characters and their desires."
