About the artist

The Tokyo-based artist, Trampoline, has an unconventional approach to creating her visual art. Contrary to many illustrators who actively seek out subjects to depict, Trampoline doesn't seek inspiration in a deliberate manner. Instead, she unearths her visual concepts through verbal notations. "I jot down words that catch my attention," she explains to It’s Nice That, using these words as a springboard to form intuitive visual representations. By arranging these words in a sequence, she generates straightforward images that evolve into her vivid and tumultuous pieces, teeming with dramatic depth and unique flair. The overall layout is dictated by the chosen words, and it is only after this framework is set that she introduces finer details. As Trampoline mentions, "The final outcome of the drawing remains a mystery until it's complete."

For Trampoline, the transformation of words into visual imagery occurs only as she begins the act of drawing. With each stroke of her pencil, she brings forth distinct visuals, assigning colors to the shapes and characters as she progresses. In her forthcoming solo exhibition, featuring a collection of illustrations displayed in Tokyo across March and August of the following year, Trampoline employs the versatile Risograph printer. This particular medium enhances the tactile quality and striking boldness of her vivid, comic book-style illustrations.
