About the artist
In the vibrant world of illustration and mural art, Kate Voronina stands as a luminary, her work a testament to a decade-long career that has spanned continents and captivated audiences with its unique blend of traditional methods and modern sensibilities. Born and raised in Moscow, Voronina's artistic journey began at the Academy of Art, where she honed her skills for six formative years. Her education continued with a course in illustration at the prestigious British Higher School of Design (BHSAD), laying the foundation for a career that would see her work grace the pages of international publications and the walls of buildings across Europe.
Voronina's professional voyage started in Tel Aviv in 2016, where she joined the Israeli animation studio Poink as a background artist. Her contributions to the cartoon "Camilla" were recognized on the global stage when it was shortlisted for the Cannes Film Festival in 2018. This success marked the beginning of a new chapter as she moved to Berlin in 2018, where she embarked on her career as a mural artist. Her murals, a dazzling array of colors and textures, have transformed the urban landscape, with her most notable work being the Brave Wall, a 10-story tribute to women's rights that has become a landmark in the city.
In 2019, Voronina, along with her friend Susannah Garden, launched the Sunday Sketching Berlin Project. This initiative, which sees the duo teaching illustration in various locations across Berlin, has not only sharpened their own artistic skills but also fostered a community of artists and enthusiasts. Voronina's repertoire is diverse, ranging from picture books and editorial illustrations to silkscreen prints and even painting on vases. She is also a sought-after instructor, leading drawing workshops and maintaining a passion for sketching.
Her collaborative spirit has led to partnerships with a roster of clients that reads like a who's who of the creative world: The Parisianer, Bastille, The Washington Post, Little White Lies, Good Impact, GQ, The Culture Trip, Speisekarte, Schwarzrotgold magazines, La Pasteque, Urban Nation Museum Berlin, Amnesty International, Writer’s Block Murals, Rebel Girls, Beit Hatfutsot Museum Tel Aviv, and Babbel. Each collaboration is a testament to Voronina's versatility and the impact of her art in various mediums.
Now residing in Paris since 2023, Voronina continues to push the boundaries of her craft, her work a vibrant reflection of her journey from Moscow to the world stage. As a senior editor of The New York Times, I am privileged to witness and document the evolution of an artist whose contributions to the global art scene are as colorful and impactful as the murals she creates.
