About this Artist

Emerging from Calgary’s rugged landscapes, Gary McMillan has carved a singular path as an artist balancing wry introspection with meticulous craft. Born and educated in Alberta, McMillan initially pursued science and fine art at the University of Calgary (1978–1980) before exhibiting evocative Albertan landscapes throughout the 1980s. A pivotal shift came with his enrollment at the Alberta College of Art and Design (ACAD, 1989–1991), where he earned a Diploma with Distinction, double-majoring in painting and printmaking. This formal training honed his critical lens, emboldening him to fuse human figures and landscapes with surreal absurdity—a hallmark of his thematic series.

McMillan’s career defies convention. For three decades, he has sustained parallel lives: as a professional wax model maker in the jewelry industry, crafting precise designs by day, and as a painter navigating the interplay of reality and imagination by night. Though his jewelry work demands technical rigor, he reserves creative fervor for the canvas. After a hiatus during the 2000s—when jewelry dominated post-recession—he returned to painting in 2009, embracing digital tools and contemporary themes with renewed vigor.

Yet reintegration into the art world proved challenging. An introvert by nature, McMillan confronted the necessity of networking, mastering proposal writing, and digitizing his portfolio—skills uncharted during his ACAD years. “I had to push myself forward with a smile,” he reflects, acknowledging the delicate dance between solitary creation and communal engagement. His persistence bore fruit: exhibitions in Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver, alongside annual ACAD workshops, cement his dual identity as craftsman and avant-garde storyteller.

McMillan credits ACAD with instilling “critical insight and liberated imagination,” though he ruefully admits missed opportunities for mentorship. Today, he champions art schools as incubators of originality, vital for cultural vitality. “Societies thrive on inventive art,” he asserts, linking ACAD’s role to Calgary’s burgeoning creative identity.

Ambition lingers beneath his pragmatic exterior. While content with local acclaim, he harbors grander visions: recognition in New York, London, Berlin. Yet his core ethos remains rooted in authenticity. “Art must transcend self-imposed limits,” he says, a philosophy echoing through his layered canvases.

In a world often prioritizing spectacle, McMillan’s quiet perseverance—bridging craftsmanship and absurdity—offers a testament to art’s enduring, unyielding pulse.
